Tuesday May 16th MWTC Luncheon Speaker Announced

Foreign Exchange Risk Management:

Emphasis - China’s Move Towards A Floating Yuan

Chickasaw Country Club – Noon

Please RSVP Early as this event will fill up quickly!

The Memphis World Trade Club is pleased to announce that Bernard V. Garra, Senior Vice President and Division Head of Foreign Exchange at ABN Amro Bank of Chicago will be our May 16th noon luncheon speaker.  Bernard’s visit to Memphis is courtesy of ABN Amro’s Tennessee business partner - AmSouth.

Foreign exchange risk management is an issue that many companies fail to address properly.  As the global marketplace continues to grow, companies doing business abroad will find that dealing in the home market currency will bring price transparency to their transactions.  In order to maximize this benefit, companies need to actively manage their currency risk through the use of hedging products.  China is a good example of this trend.  Due to the managed exchange rate of the Chinese Yuan, companies dealing in China have up to now benefited from paying for goods in US dollars.  As China progresses toward a floating exchange rate environment, companies that have positioned themselves to manage the exchange rate risk will be able to best manage the impact this change will have on their cash flows. New Orleans Trade Mission / Port Tour – Sep 15? (TBA)

The trip date has not yet been finalized.  We are tentatively looking at the weekend of September 15th.  The idea is to have a trade mission.  There will still be the customary Port & Vessel Tour, as well as rooms at a hotel in the Quarter.  This time in addition to the port educational component, we will be planning a series of meetings and events to illustrate to Memphis and surrounding business leaders what is working.  We will show how we as Members can again engage the Crescent City, as they work to rebuild.  Thanks again to Steve Tuttle and Ben Jabbour for their yeoman efforts.  Save the date and stay tuned for more details.  If you would like to go ahead and bookmark the New Orleans Trade Mission page, click here and you will be directed to that evolving page

April Medtronic Sofamor Danek Luncheon Was a Success!

Many thanks to Russell Powers, V.P. International, Medtronic Sofamor Danek, for speaking to our club in April.  Russell’s information about the global challenges faced and projected growth of Medtronic, particularly overseas, should have been of particular interest to our Members.

Membership Renewals & Updated Member Contact Information

Historically there is a mad rush just before Port Night to renew memberships. Thank you for your kind attention and renewals.  Please consider an early membership renewal which will balance out the volunteer workload on the Board members and friends of the club that coordinate the membership process.

Please also ensure the club has several ways to contact you.  We maintain this data confidentially and would for example only try a backup personal e-mail or home number ONLY to reach you if you were no longer at a former company.  If you switch jobs and we don’t know about it, your club e-mail or faxes will keep going to the old location in our database and your listing becomes stale.  Then there is no other way to let you know about our meetings and news.  Much like a continuous bond, YOU are the club member and we want your membership to stay active, even if you switch companies.
