Canadian Trading Partnerships

Memphis and the Mid-South have a wonderful trading relationship with Canada.  The Canada-US trade is well know but sometimes taken for granted.  The 1 billion dollars per day trade mark between the US and Canada is a number almost too big to process.  While not all of that number comes from business in Tennessee, we are one of the 39 states whose biggest export partner is Canada.  That partnership translates into over 100,000 Tennessee jobs, many here in the Mid-South.  We are fortunate to have a partner like Canada to not only share a border, but also share a prosperous two-way trade.

Please plan to attend our Feb speaker luncheon where we will be hosting the Canadian Consul General – Atlanta, Mr. Brian Oak.  In keeping with this month’s general Canadian theme as well as our ongoing consideration to last month’s speaker, Mr. Robert Landry from our friends at The Port of New Orleans, why not join us for ice hockey on Fat Tuesday?

You will find more details on these and other matters below.

Tuesday February 21st Noon Luncheon Speaker Announced

The Memphis World Trade Club is pleased to announce that Canadian Consul General, Atlanta Brian Oak will be the February 21 noon luncheon speaker.  Brian Oak joined Canada’s Department of Industry, Trade and Commerce (ITC) in 1978.  He has served abroad in Prague, Washington and Santiago, and Quito, and is currently Consul General of Canada in Atlanta, Georgia.

In Ottawa, Mr. Oak served in the Western Europe Division of ITC, and the Eastern Europe, Japan, and United States Trade Development Divisions of the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT).  From 2000 to 2003, he was Director of the Policy and Strategic Planning Division of DFAIT’s Trade Commissioner Service, and subsequently was appointed Executive Assistant to the Deputy Minister of International Trade.

Mr. Oak received both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Carleton University, Ottawa: a BA Honours (Soviet and East European Studies) in 1973, and his MA (International Affairs) in 1978.  He and his wife, Lydia, have two sons, Jason and Adrian.

He was appointed Canada’s Consul General to Atlanta in October 2005, and assumed his new duties on January 17, 2006, succeeding Malcolm McKechnie.  Mr. Oak’s responsibilities cover a six-state territory in the southeastern United States (Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama and Mississippi).

The event will be held at The Chickasaw Country Club on Tuesday February 21st at Noon.  The luncheon speaker meeting will begin promptly.

If you would like to attend the February Luncheon, and learn more about our robust Canadian Trade, please make your reservations online at the Club’s website: http://www.memphisworldtradeclub.com/rsvptestmwtc.php

Please note, RSVPs equate to guaranteed payment to the club.

Membership Renewals & Updated Member Contact Information

Historically there is a mad rush just before Port Night to renew memberships. Thank you for your kind attention and renewals.  Please consider an early membership renewal which will balance out the volunteer workload on the Board members and friends of the club that coordinate the membership process.

Please also ensure the club has several ways to contact you.  We maintain this data confidentially and would for example only try a backup personal e-mail or home number ONLY to reach you if you were no longer at a former company.  If you switch jobs and we don’t know about it, your club e-mail or faxes will keep going to the old location in our database and your listing becomes stale.  Then there is no other way to let you know about our meetings and news.  Much like a continuous bond, YOU are the club member and we want you to stay actively involved, even if you switch companies.

January Luncheon had Excellent Participation & Many Guests Attended

We had outstanding participation at the January meeting.  Our thanks to Mr. Robert Landry for an insightful update.  As we learned, the Port is making a steady comeback and many more vessels are calling.  Please consider using The Port of New Orleans where appropriate in your supply chain to help with the ongoing rebuilding efforts.  We may have even set a January luncheon record.  Good news was we had record numbers attend.  Coupled with that but equally important to the club, we had a record number of non reserved attendees and a record number of reserved no shows.  It all washed out okay last month but we politely remind our members and friends the real importance of a reasonably accurate luncheon plate count for the wonderful Chickasaw staff.  We encourage you to join us for the upcoming February speaker meeting and bring at least one New Member Candidate to the meeting.  Please RRSVP on-line if you are able.  http://www.memphisworldtradeclub.com/rsvptestmwtc.php

About The Memphis World Trade Club

We are one of the largest International Trade Clubs in the southeast part of the United States.  Founded in 1947, the Memphis World Trade Club boasts a membership close to 300, with events that bring together over 1,000 people each year.  Our objective is to promote participation and growth in international trade, and to provide a medium in which to exchange information and ideas in an international networking environment.

We are the key organization in our region to meet importers and exporters, ocean carriers, railroads, truckers, airlines, customs house brokers and forwarders, port representatives, international bankers, and more.

We are proud of our partnership with the Memphis Regional Chamber of Commerce, and equally proud to support the dynamic distribution and logistics industry located in and around the Memphis area.
